Fourteen Bays' for Theft of Overcoat
HOTEL PORTER SENTENCED. Herbert Albert Edward Scott, an hotel porter, aged 30 years, appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged witn the theft, on or about July at Palmerston North, of an overcoat valued at £4 I9s Cd, the property of Reginald Thomas Chatlield. Accused pleaded guilty and a further charge of behaving in a disorderly manner was then withdrawn by tho police. Senior-Sergeant Whitchouso explained that the accused had been in the habit of changing his clothe s in a room from which tnc coat disappeared. Ho had been suspected but, although found in poscssion of the clothing, . subsequently denied having taken it. Accused asked for probation. The Magistrate: You liave been treated leniently before and you will bo convicted and sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. You had four chances before. An order was also made for the return of the coat.
