Golden Wedding of Princess Elizabeth’s Grandparents
OVERHANGING SHADOW OF CRUSHING TAXATION.
United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Tuesday, 10.55 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 11. The Earl and Countess of Strathmore ’s golden wedding celebrations are overshadowed by tho fear that increasing taxation may result in the closing of ancient Glamis Castle. Lord Strathmore says the times are becoming so bad that ho may be unable to remain in residence. “Taxation absorbs £BO or every £IOO I receive. On top of that comes the new land tax. I feel I am afraid I may have to retire.’’ Princess Elizabeth rose early to greet her grandparents. There were scenes of old-time pageantry at the castlo to-night when 400 tenants and employees some of whom had served the Strathmores for a lifetime attended the ball, many Doing kilted. . Tho Duke and Duchess of York assisted in the arrangements. Two thousand attend the garden party to-morrow when Sir Harry Lauder sings.
