Central Relief Funds
A general meeting of members of the Central Relief Committee was held last evening in the City Council chambers. There was a large attendance, presided over by the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. A. J. Graham and M. H. Oram, Ensign Bridge, Rev. J. D. McArthur and the secretary (Mr. A. J. Phillipps). Reports were received from the various depots as follows:—• Food depot: Good results were received from the pound parcel system and the collection of parcels by the Boy Scouts. Clothing depot: There is an urgent need for donations of men’s boots, shirts, socks and underclothing. Fuel depot: Supplies of wood are nearly exhausted and donations of this commodity are required. A gift of a two-year-old thoroughbred for disposal in aid of the funds was accepted from Mr. E. F. Thwaites. x\n offer to supply a series of concerts in the surrounding districts was also accepted, and transport will be arranged for the entertainers. On Sunday night next the members of St. Andrew’s Church choir will give a concert in the Opera House in aid of the funds. Encouraging reports were received from the sub-committccs regarding the street day to be held on Saturday, August 22. Accounts totalling £166 16/3 w'ero passed for payment. Donations to the funds are coming in slowly, and further canvassing is to be undertaken. Appreciation of the efforts of Mr. J. Garde Grimshaw and party was recorded for the proceeds of the concert on Sunday last.
The following additional donations have been received by the Central Relief Fund: Previously acknowledged, £662 7s Id; J. Blackwood, £5; Palmerston North Guild of Registered Architects, £5; total, £672 7s Id.
