The death is announced from Wellington of Eev. Father J. Gpggan, at the age of SI. Mr. J. McGillicuddy, representative of the Opaki riding, on the Mastcrton County Council for the past five years, has resigned his seat. A -well-known Prosbytcrinn minister of Wellington, Eev. Eobert Wood, died yesterday. He was a prominent worker in the Bible-iu-schools movement.

At last evening’s meeting- of the Manawatu Eugby District Council, a motion of sympathy Ava s passed with Mr. Lance Mullins in the death of his mother.

Mr. J. D. MatthcAvs, of Mangahao, who has been confined to his bed for nearly two montlrs, underwent an operation at his home last week, and his condition now shows some improvement. Messrs. N. Scurr (Dunedin), L. E. Bryant (Nelson), W. Lints (Wanganui), J. K. Purdy (AVellington), P. K. Fowler and E. Porter (Palmerston North) were yesterday welcomed as visitors to the weekly meeting of the Palmerston North Citizens’ Lunch Club. Messrs. E. J. Parr and J. Mawson, inspectors for the Education Department, are at present visiting the Palmerston North Boys’ High School in connection with the annual inspection and the awarding of free places to students.

Captain Edward Graham has retired after fifty years’ service with the Anchor Company, having been in command of tho Kennedy, Waverley, Charles Edward, Kaitoa, Waimea, Begulu s and Titoki. He w r as the recipient of a substantial cheque in recognition of his long and faithful services, says a Nelson’’wire.

Mr. A. O. Heany, formerly of the literary staff, of tho Manawatu Daily Times, and recently appointed organising secretary of tho Associated Chambers of Commerce, is to be congratulated by the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce on his appointment, a decision to this effect having been made at yesterday’s meeting of the council of that body.

The death has occurred of Mr. George Worth, formerly of tho Post and Telegraph Department, and who joined the staff of the Palmerston North office some forty years ago, serving ably and well in tho several departments. About tAveuty years ago ho received promotion and acted as postmaster in the South Island until his retirement on superannuation. Latterly lie has resided in New Plymouth where he passed away yesterday morning. Tho late Mr. Worth leaves a widoAV and daughter to mourn their loss.

In vicAV of his approaching marriage Mr. L. A. (“Tui”) Ecichcnbach, of the mail room department at the Palmerston North Chief Post Office, tvas yesterday met by fellow members of the staff and made tho presentation of a dinner service. Mr. C. Sigley, senior supervisor of the postal branch, in making the presentation on behalf of the staff, referred to the many years of sterling service Mr. Bcichenback had given at Palmerston North, and alluded to his popularity during that period. Messrs. C. Edwards, M. Hyland and othor speakers also made eulogistic reference to tho officer’s Avork. Mr. Ecichcnbach suitably responded.

Kcforcncc to the passing of the late Mr. C. H. Warden, of Wanganui ,and formerly of Palmerston North, was made by the chairman of the Central School Committee (tho Eev. J. D. McArthur) at last evening’s meeting of that body. “The deceased gentleman was, several years ago, first assistant at the old Campbell street (Central) school, of Palmerston North,’’ stated Mr. McArthur, “and ho Avas well-known and deeply respected by the many expupils of this school Avho were connected with -him during the UO years he spent in the city.” Tho members theu stood in silence as a mark of respect to the deceased gentleman.

The late Mr. George Childs, of Palmerston North, who passed atvay this week, Avas Avell-luiown in hockey circles in the city and in his younger days enjoyed a great record in various blanches of sport, having been a track cyclist, runner, and league footballer in liis native city of Dunedin. He acted as coach to the Central School Old Boys’ Hockey Club, being ais.o a vicepresident of the club, it Avas in his capacity of coach that he accompanied the team to Fcilding on Saturday where he Avas overtaken Avith a seizure which had fatal results. Fifty-two years of age, deceased leaves a widow and a family of ttvo daughters and one son —Mrs. Anderson, of Leith street, Dunedin, Mrs. Cunningham, of Cuba streot, Palmerston North, and Mr. Philip Childs, of Palmerston North.
