Bridge That Earned 15,000,000 Dollars in Tolls
HOW IT IS DONE IN U.S.A. PHILADELPHIA, July 8. To mark the end of the fifth year since the opening of tne Delaware river bridge, between this city and Camden, officials of uotn cities field an anniversary oDscrvaiice.' During the five years that the Delaware river bridge has been open to the puDiie approximately 52,001),UuU vehicles nave passed over the span, and a total of about £3,000,006 m tolls have been paid. It is now estimated that the oridge will require only nine more years to pay for itself. Mayor Mackey of l’hiladelphia declared that not even the Holland tunnel under the Hudson carried un amount of traffic comparable to' that between this city and Camden. ‘‘The bridge," he said, “is unique among similar structures in having a toll charge of only 25 cents. This is only naif of what will be charged, I am retiabiy informed, on other bridges now built or under construction in the east.’’ The cost of the bnugc was £7,400,000,, of which Pennsylvania paid £2,150,000, Philadelphia £2,150,000, and Now Jersey £3,100,000. At the close of the year 1930 the bridge commission had paid back from its revenue 50 per cent, to New Jersey and 25 per cent, each to Pcnnsynvania and Philadelphia.
