UNDERSTATING VALUE OF N.Z. RACEHORSE

Sequal to Simba Sensation

TWO MEN BEFORE COURT

United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Monday, 9.50 p.m. SYDNEY, Aug. 10. William Calnan and George Guest were before tho Central summons court, on charges under the Customs Act arising out of the importation of the racchorso Simba. Calnan is charged with wrougtully stating the value of the horse and with having wrongfully described Simba, while Guest is charged with having understated Simba’s value at £l5O. The caso has been adjourned for a fortnight. Sold for £1000; Valued at £l5O Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. Tho New Zealand Racing Conference has received cablo advico from the Comptroller of Customs at Canberra, through tho New Zealand Customs Department conveying the information that the new regulations will have to be complied with when New Zealand horses enter Australia in future. All New Zealand-bred horses landing in Australia must be accompanied by satisfactory documentary evidence of value and if sold by the receipts of sale showing the price at which the purchase was made. In a case where no sale has taken place or if the values are changed between the sale and shipment the horse must bo accompanied by a declaration of its market value from an autliorutitivo and approved firm or agent for pedigree bloodstock sales. The imposition of tho new sales tax of ton per cent, plus six per ceut. primage on New Zealand horses entering Australia has no doubt resulted in. a too low value being placed upon certain animals. For instance it was cabled that Simba’s value for payment of the tax was £l5O whereas he was sold here for £IOOO.

The New Zealand Racing Conference is taking the necessary action and will inform persons desiring to ship horses to Australia of the new requirements.
