Mrs. Helen Wills-Moody (U.S.A.) defeated Miss Phyllis Mudford (Britain) 6 —l, 6—4. Miss Helen Jacobs (U.S.A.) defeated Miss Betty Nuthall (Britain) S—6, 6—4. There were 5000 spectators at Dorost Hills. Miss Mudford seemed stagestruck at the outset, and hit wildly against Mrs. Moody’s well-timed drives. Miss Mudford rallied in the second set to score on a break through Mrs. Moody’s service and give a splendid account of herself in a scries of hardfought baseline duels. Mrs. Moody played confidently, but was frequently forced to scramble for Miss Mudford's flying shots to the corners. Miss Jacobs made a sensational comeback to chop-stroke her way to triumph after dropping the first four games. She exhibited superb control after steadying down, whereas Miss Nuthall, after a characteristic start, wilted under the intense heat. Miss Helen Jacobs defeated Miss Mudford 6—4, 6—2. Miss Mudford's service wag highly effective, but she could not compete with Miss Jacobs’ backhand drives. Miss Mudford rapidly tired under the extreme heat. Mrs Helen Wills-Moody defeated Miss Betty Nuthall 6—4, 6—2 before a gallery of 8000. Miss Nuthall began briskly by taking four straight points for the opening game, but Mrs. Moody broke through her service in the third for a two to one lead, but was out-stroked iu the fourth and lost her own delivery ag Betty kept her on the run. Miss Nuthall failod to score a point in the sixth game and. thou double-faulted three times and never seemed to recover from it. . i . • Mrs.. Harper beat Miss Dorothy Round 6—3, 4—G, 9—7. It was a marathon match and lasted almost two hours. Mrs. Shepherd Barron and Miss Mudford defeated Mrs. Wightman and Miss Sarah Palfrey 6—4, 10—8; Miss Nuthall and Miss Bennett defeated Mrs. Moodv and Mrs, Harper S—6, 5—7. 6—3."
