MANAWATU’S EXCELLENT SHOWING IN BOXING CHAMPS.
The New Zealand Amateur Boxing Association’s championship tournament was continued at Ashburton last evening when the Manawatu representatives were again prominent.
M. Candy went to the lightweight semi-final after defeating his elu) mate Oxley, and was then eliminated by Gregory of Gisborne. Bantam. C. Warne continued his undo feated career by accounting for the Otago representative Richmond, and he has apparently reached the semi-final. J. Cossill, the Massey College hope, has fought his w T ay into two finals, the heavy and light-heavy, and he will bo the star performer to-night, having to battle for both titles in the one evening. The finals will be broadcast from 3YA. Per Press Association. ASHBURTON, Last Night. Bantam-weight. D. Roebuck (Taranaki) S.Oi defeated J. Cowcn (Greymouth) 8.0. The final was tame until Roebuck used his right effectively. R. Williams (Auckland) S.l-J defeated L. Larsen (Wellington) 7.12. A good bout, Larsen using an effective left. C. Warne (Manawatu) beat J. Richmond (Otago) after two cautious rounds and forcing the third. Ply-weight. J. Johnston (Christchurch) 7.71 beat P. Pearcey (Auckland) 7.3. The winner carried the fight all the way and had an easy victory. Peather-weight. J. Pranklin (Gisborne) 8.13 beat L, Drieberg (Napier) 8.11. The winner led most of the time. In the third round both suffered damage. C. Manson (Whangarei) beat W. Prcndergast (Ashburton) by default. C. Manson (Whangarei) 8.11 beat J. Pranklin (Gisborne) after three fast, punishing rounds. Manson was the raster and cleverer boxer. P. G. Hawes (Christchurch) S.ll beat H. Donkin (Hawke’s Bay) S.ll in a fast, keen and even contest. Both took heavy punishment. R. Purdie (Auckland) 8.12 beat W. Hawes (Westport) 8.13 i in a mediumly interesting fight. The winner was too fast.
A. Turner (Taranaki) 8.13_ beat P. G-. Hawe s (Christchurch) S.ll in three fast rounds.. Turner was the heavier puncher. Light-weight. D. Campbell won by default from G. Gillingham (Greymouth). R. Gregory (Gisborne) 9.104 defeated L. Ennis (Timaru), 9.51. Gregory showed better skill and Ennis was severely punished in the third. R. MeLauchlin (Auckland) 9.12 beat P. Bennie (Napier) 9.9 in three slogging rounds of strong fighting. E. Oxley (Manawatu) 9.7, beat J. N. Moulin (Christchurch) 9.9. The third round was most willing, Oxley leading ali through the bout.■ H. Thomas (Wellington). 9.9 beat A. Howie (Whangarei) 9.10. Thomas was the faster and heavier puncher and more scientific. R. Gregory (Gisborne) 9.104 beat R. MeLauchlin (Auckland) 9.12. An uninteresting bout with a succession of clinches and wild hitting. H. Thomas ("Wellington) .9.9 beat D. Campbell (Otago) 9.10. The winner wa s the more scientific. Campbell stood up to heavy punishment. E. Griffin (Taranaki) won by default from P. J. Prcndergast (Southland). P. Cowan (Auckland) won by default from H. Lister (Greymouth). M. Candy (Manawatu) 9.13 beat E. Oxley (Manawatu) 9.7. After two slow rounds the third was fast and the decision was a popular one. Semi-final: R. Gregory (Gisborne) 9.10 beat M. Candy (Manawatu) 9.13. In a tame bout both boys were cautious with little open fighting. Welter-weight. R. Martin (Auckland) 10.6 beat W. Withey (Wellington) 1U.3-J. The winner made points with a sound straight left—a very willing bout. B. Lowe (Otago) 10.8 beat R. Furze (Taranaki) 10.7 on a technical knockout in the first round. Lowe forced the fight. J. Taylor (Hawke’s Bay) beat M. Burke (Southland) with a knock-out to the point in the third round. Burke led the first two rounds. B. Lowe (Otago) 10.9 beat R. Martin (Auckland) 10.6. Lowe was the better boxer and scored heavily in all rounds. W. Hogg (Napier) won by default from P. Lundy (Ashburton). W. Hogg (Napier) 10.3 beat J. Taylor XHawicc’s Bay) 10.7 in a one-sided bout, Hogg being the superior boxer. Middle-weigut. X. Cowan (Ashburton) 11.1 beat A. Dasler (Marlborough) 11.2. All the rounds were characterised by heavy punching. Both were tired at the finish. N. Neale (Auckland) 11.2 beat G. McEwen (Southland) 11.1. The third round was the only interesting one. The Aucklander was better in the open.
K. Cowan (Ashburton) 11.1 beat 11. Lister (Greymouth) 11.3 in a good fight. The loser fought gamely and took a severe battering. It was a popular win. T. Croft (Greymouth) 11.2 beat N. Neale (Auckland) 11.2 in a solid plugging fight with no speed. Light-heavy-weight. E. Griffin (Taranaki) 11.10 beat P. Cowan (Auckland) 11.11 in a knockout in the first round.
Heavy-weight. J. Cossill (Manawatu) 11.13 beat B. J. Baines (Christchurch) 11.13. The winner forced the pace all the way. L. Painter (Auckland) won by default from G. Croft (Greymouth).
