Russell Street School
A REAL GRIEVANCE The Russell Street School Committee met at the school last night, there be ing present Messrs. D. Morrison (chairman), Wright, Vasey, Lees, Perrin and Larcomb (lion, secretary. Also in attendance were the headmaster (Mr. I. C. Campbell) and Mr. Mountfort. Correspondence was received from the Minister of Education and from the Wanganui Education Board, advising that the report of the senior inspector was awaited before tho committee’s request for an additional classroom could be considered. It was felt by the committee that this was only an excuse, as the senior inspector had already reported in support of the classroom. There was a further communication advancing tho suggestion that the school might get relief if the junior high school scheme were brought into operation, but as the school roll was bein built up from tho infant classes, the committee could sco little in this possibility. Russell street considers it has a real grievance over the high-handed treatment meted out by those in authority. The school is overcrowded, and new pupils cannot be taken on tho roll. The district is rapidly growing and urgent attention to the accommodation is necessary. Mr. Vasey was appointed the committee’s representative on the School Committees’ Association. Accounts amounting to £66 15/8 were passed for payment. The headmaster’s report disclosed that the roll was 220. Gifts of books had been received from Mr. and Mrs. Wright and Mr. and Mrs. Purton, a football from the Manawatu District Rugby Council, and samples of wallpaper from Messrs. Alexander Clark, Ltd. Tho representatives of tho Royal Life Saving Society will visit the school at 10.30 to-day to present certificates, A letter of sympathy is to bo sent to Mrs. C. H. Warden and family in their bereavement. Tho visiting committee's report was adopted. It was left in the hands of the headmaster to arrange for a fitting celebration of Arbor Day. Messrs. Perrin and W’riglit were appointed a visiting committee for next month. Owing to the school vacation, tho committee will next meet on September 9.
