West End Objects To School at Takaro
WILL AFFECT PRESENT INSTITUTION
At a meeting of the West End School Committee held this week, the opinion was expressed that the establishment of a primary school in the suburb of Takaro, as proposed, would adversely affect the attendance and. probably the grade of the institution in the western quarter of the city. Mr. G. Tremaine (chairman) stated that it was a serious position, for at present there were many children on the roll who resided in the Takaro vicinity. The headmaster (Mr. H. W. Jackson) agreed that the new school would have a detrimental effect on the West End roll.
“Pupils can bo sent to any school their parents desire to send them to, provided there is no expense incurred by the board. The department can ask parents to send their children to a certain school, but it cannot force them to do so. The schools in Palmerston North arc very badly placed,” he added.
Mr. G. K. Hollier (secretary) was in agreement with the contention regarding tho faulty choice of the sites of the city’s primary schools. He considered that West End school should have been erected at the corner of Cook and Ferguson streets. It was agreed that the position of the roll, if tho new school wero erected, should be explained to Mr. M. H. Oram, a member of the Wanganui Education Board,
Advocates of tho Cuba street site for a new school to accommodate the overflow from Central school, where it is proposed to erect a wooden building in addition to the alterations to the existing brick one, are circulating a petition in Takaro and tho adjacent districts to secure support for their proposal.
