Mate Washed Onboard From Royal Yacht
KING takes part in FRUITLESS RESCUE EFFORT

While the Royal yacht Britannia was proceeding to the opening of the faces at Cowes Regatta, the vessel heeled over and a wave washed overboard the second mate, Ernest Friend. The King, who was on board, was deeply moved by the tragedy and took an active part in rescue work, but a heavy sea was running, and Friend, though a strong swimmer, was unable to keep afloat. The Britannia searched tho spot for half-an-hour without result. Meanwhile there was tremendous excitement amongst the spectators ashore and on the yachts at Cowes. A rumour that the King had met with a mishap was soon dispelled and the King returned to reassure the Queen. Britannia Will Not Start in King’s Cup Received Tuesday, 9 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 4. It is announced from the Royal yacht that owing to the loss of the second mate the King will not bo starting the Britannia in the King’s Cup on the 4th.
