School Committees

MONTHLY MEETINGS Tlio Lytton street school committee met on Monday night, Mr. J. Penney (chairman) presiding. There were also present Mesdames A. C. McCorkindalc and P. Pearson, and Messrs. J. S. Tin gey, W. G. Short, R. Hoald, H. Parsonage, T. K) Hay and the acting-head-master (Mr. G. H. Elstonc). In'his report the headmaster stated that both the roll and the average- attendance were increasing, the roll at the end of the month standing at 337, with an average attendance of 90 per cent. Miss Gosnell had joined the staff on July 20, taking over standards la and 2b. Two Rugby teams had visited Palmerston North to take part in the junior competitions on July IS, and on July 30 a Rugby team and a.baskctball team had journeyed to Marton, Although not successful in any of the several events, the competitors had enjoyed the outings. Mr. E. 11. Lange, instructor in agriculture, had visited the school on Friday last and expressed satisfaction with the work done. He presented the prizes won in the mangold growing competitions. Notification was received from the Wanganui Education Board regarding the appointment of Mr. W. C. Wilson as headmaster as from September 8. It was agreed to observe Arbor Day some time in September, the date to be left to the chairman and secretary to arrange. The thanks of the committee were accorded Mr. Tin-gey, who undertook to donate suitable trees to' the value of £1 for planting during the ceremony.

The Manchester street school committee met on Monday night, Mr. G. J. Fitzpatrick (chairman) presiding. The headmaster (Mr. R. L. Mcllroy) reported that tho roll strength at the end of July was 425, with an average attendance for the month of 91 per cent. Fifty hedge plants had been procured and planted at the rear of one of the lawns. Preparations were well under way for the fancy dress ball to be held on August 14. The committee decided to provide the organisation for the fancy dress ball, sub-committces being set up to deal with the supper arrangements, etc.
