Speed of Visiting Backs the Bedding Factor Forwards Well Matched in Big Scoring Game Saturday’s trial Rugby match between teams drawn from the southern and northern portions of the Manawatu Rugby district attracted a large crowd to the Showgrounds on Saturday and the spectators witnessed a very interesting game which was fast and open and in which 56 points were scored. The match was won by the north side, selected from the two Feilding clubs and the Te Kawau and Oroua Sub-Unions. The south team was composed of players drawn from the four city teams. The two sets of forwards were evenly matched, but the superior speed of the North flying division made a considerable difference, for it was this which enabled them to turn mistakes to good account. The final scores were: North 35, South 21.

The Teams The teams lined out as follows: — South (blue): Feavnley (U.), Campbell (U.), Tremewan (O.B.), Bradley (O.B), H. Ormond (U.), Fletcher (O.B.), Akuira (O.B.), Biel (K.T.), Nesbit (U.), Boldt (K.T.), McKenzie (K.T.), Dalziell (U.), Findlay (K.T.), Cooper (M.C.), Henry (O.B.). North (green): S. Bramwcll (F. 0.8.), L. Moffatt (T.K.), M. Moffatt (T.K.), F; Elliott (F.), N. Bramwell (F. 0.8.), Dewe (F. 0.8.), K. Shapleski (F. 0.8.), N. Amadio (F. 0.8.), C. Hight (F.), A. Martin (0.1, T. Miles (O.), Millard (T.K.), M. Conrad (F. 0.8.), J. Monk (O.), F. Fitzgerald (F.). The Game North won tho toss and opened with the wind behind them. The kick went out at the quarter flag and Akuira was instrumental in gaining further ground, but this initial advantage was lost when Akuira was caught taking the ball out of the serum. N. Amadio kicked through to Fearnley, who failed to find the line. His return was fielded by Amadio who made no mistake and found tho line near the corner. The South forwards worked back to tho other end, where they were awarded a penalty, Fearnley having a shot, which went wide. The First Score The greens worked back to the other end and Amadio failed to find the uprights from a penalty. The movement, however, resultod in a score when Shaploski obtained in mid-field from a loose scramble. Ho sent a bad pass to Dewe, who accepted. Dewe sent on to his club mate, N. Bramwell, who outpaced the opposition beforo passing to L. Moffatt, the ball coming back to M. Moffatt, who beat three men and grounded well out. Amadio failed to convert. North 3, South 0. Bramwell, who returned to near the line, whero the bounce heat Campbell. N. Amadio secured and instituted a sparkling movement, in which Martin, Dewe and Monk handled the hall, Martin being grassed just short. A penalty brought relief. The South forwards, with a succession of short rushes, worked deep into North torritory and Henry got the ball. A Costly Mistake A promising rush was spoiled when a pass to tho wing went astray. L. Moffatt promptly gathered the ball in in his stride and set off for the line. Ho raced round the full back and scored well out. Amadio again missed with the kick. North 6, South 0. Moffatt Repeats the Dose A moment later L. Moffatt again took advantage of a mistake made by the South, and he increased tho score to nine with a similar run. M. Moffatt added the major points. North 11, South 0. This reverse spurred the South to greater efforts and Biel broke away from a scrum and went through to the full back before passing out to Bradley on tho wing. Bradley gathered the ball in and dashed over, but was recalled by the line umpire, having put a foot out. A Nice Movement North worked back to half way, where from a scrum Monk heeled out to Shapleski, the ball going back to Monk, to Shapleski, to Amadio, who beat Fearnley to score a try which M. Moffatt converted. North 16. South 0. South were not downhearted and again attacked. The backs went away from a scramble near the green 25, and Fletcher, cutting through nicely, made a great opening, his reverse pass, however, not ’being accepted. North carried the game to tho other end again, and Amadio added another three points from a penalty kick near the side line. North 19, South 0. There followed a brilliant forward rush by the blues, and Henry nearly "landed tho mustard,” being grassed just short after a great effort. Bramwell in the North team, Strange taking Campbell’s place for the South. The spell opened with a penalty for North, Amadio's kick from near half way falling just under the bar. Blue Vanguard Again Fletcher cleared the line and the blue forwards buried tho opposition with a series of rushes. Biel made the first opening, streaking through only to throw a high pass when the way was open. The game then went to the corner and Strange made a bold bid for it, being np-ended near the flag. Henry was at hand, however, and he gathered the ball and dived over. Akuira again failed. North 22, South 6. . Try by Tremewan

FEILDING HIGH ACCOUNTS FOR P.N. HIGH SECONDS. IN INTER-SCHOOL FIXTURE. As a curtain-raiser to the main game, the Palmerston North High School second fifteen encountered the representatives of the Feilding Agricultural High School, the final result being nine points to 6 in favour of Feilding. The teams were: — Feilding High School (red, white and blue): Trass, Guthrie, Crump, Williams, Alan, Turi, Burgess, Prebble, Turnbull, Farmer Mitchell, Leitch Twigg, Herbert, Min gins. Palmerston North High School (blue and white): Winnard, Ongley, Hoffmoister, Orgias, Bradley, Roach, Plank, McSkimming, Kriven, Lewin, Moffatt, Muir, Palmer, Vantier, Robinson. Playing with the wind and sun, High School commenced activities in optimistic fashion, Plank, at half, sending his backs off, Roach cutting in for the centre, Hoffmeister, to complete a spectacular movement, 3 —o. The home side was then given a taste of intensive defending. Before the hardpressed defenders drove upheld, Feilding attempted two fruitless goals. With the play again in High School’s favour, the backs swung the leather about in promising fashion and were somewhat unfortunate in not adding to their early advantage. One one occasion, when matters appeared serious for the visitors, Robinson was grassed a foot short of his objective after wresting the leather from an opponent. Despite strenuous milling tactics and frequent passing attempts, the attackers were unable to culminate their efforts and half-time was signalled with no further scoring. Feilding secured much of the ball on the recommencement and, following upon Bradley delaying his pass in a clearance effort, the Feilding boys piled to the attack, Mingins snapping up to race across. Crump failed to add the major points: 3 —all. Guthrie returned his forwards to school’s territory with a speedy burst down the line, but Orgias was handy and, accepting the kick, endeavoured to force over. Holding this advantage Plank whipped clear to his backs, Ongley finishing off & nice movement in the corner. Hoffmeister found the range difficult: P.N. 6 —3.

Struggling desperately the Feilding forwards drove upheld and, working in conjunction with their rearguard, were unfortunate in not being able to equalise. Crump, a big boy at centre, was always trying to burst through and was finally rewarded when, after accepting on the quarter line, he flashed past the -would-be tacklers to run over in a handy spot. Mitchell duffed the bright goaling chance: 6 —all. Feilding were proving superior in all departments of -play towards the closing stages, holding school continually at a disadvantage They were offered a penalty shot just on the "no side” bell and Crump, from 40 yards out, landed a beautiful goal giving his side the final advantage: 9 —6. Mr. D. Heggie refereed. ,

Tlie blue forwards again attacked, but were penalised twice in quick succession. They kept at it, however, and, from a melee on the line, sent the ball out to the -backs to travel along the
