Family Gold Rush In Main Street
PERTH, March 4. In the main street of Menzies, an old gold mining town in the North Coolgardic goldfield, a woman named Miss J. Allen, recently “specked” a piec<» of gold i\it far from the footpath.. Looking around for a little while she saw some more gold. Soon there was a rush of some 20 women to Shenton street, bringing children with them. They brought all kinds of utensils to wash and pan off their finds. Sauce-t pans and brooms were used and one matron had a carving fork. The men took no part in this affair. Eventually the women and children obtained from a patch 10 feet square small pieces of the precious metal valued at £lO. It is said that tho place was once the site of a smelting house of a mine which gave good returns in the early days of the goldfields.
