Ammon Ra Scores Convincingly in Sires' Produce Stakes

The autumn meeting opened at Randwick on Saturday in fine, cool weather, The attendance was forty-one thousand, The track was in excellent condition.

The Dimmer, a prominent cup fancy, enhanced his prospects in that event by annexing tho Autumn Stakes in decided fashion. Chide from whom great deeds were expected, was unable to gain a place. New Zealand’s champion Ammon Ra won tho richly endowed Sires Produce Stakes in effortless fashion.

The Doncaster was productive of a brilliant finishing effort on the part of the winner, Sir Christopher, who was badly placed in the early stages of the race and was fifth last on entering the straight. But, under vigorous riding by his jockey, Munro, he unwound in a dashing run which carried him to victory by half a length. Eight started. From an even start Solution smartly ran to the front followed by Royal Smile, Chide, First Acre and John Buchan with Glare last. Passing the stand Solution led by a length from Chide, First Acre, Donald and The Dimmer. ‘When heads wore turned for home, from a bunched field, Solution, Chide and Donald were prominent but at the distance John Buchan, Donald and The Dimmer were on even terms and in a desperate finish The Dimmer gained the verdict by a head. Eighteen started. Gallantic was smartest to move away from Movie Star, Rory O'Moore, Ammon Ra and Johnnie Jason. Entering the straight Rory 0 ’Moore had a slight advantage of Ammon Ra, Johnnie Jason, Gallan-t-ie, Movie Star. Taking charge at the distance Ammon Ra bounded away from the field, reaching the judge with two lengths to spare. Time, lmin 25J sec.

Casque D’Or was smartest out of the machine from Moilison, Parkwood, Tichino and Cathmar. Passing the half mile Mollison showed the way to Tichino, Waugoola and Casquo D’Or, with Waterline and Sir ChTystopher at the rear of the field. Mollison was first into the straight and at. the distance appeared to have the race in hand but Sir Chrystopher, finishing brilliantly, threaded his way through the field and got up in time to gain .the victory by half a length.

ST. LEGER: VEILMOND; 8.10 (McCartcn) .1 CARRY ON; S.S (Cook) .... 2 BALLOON KING; S.lO (Pike) 3 Reg’ilLa and Salvador wore the other starters. Balloon King took up the running from Carry On, Veilmond, Tregilla end Salvador running in that order. At the top of the straight Carry On joined Balloon King, closely pressed by Veilmond and followed by Tregilla and Salvador. At the distance Balloon King, Carry On and Veilmond were on oven terms but Veilmond, finishing strongly ,drew away to win by three lengths. Time, 3min 2sec. VACULUSE HANDICAP: First Division. T REV ALLION; 8.10 (Pike) .. 1 COMMANDANT; 8.0 (Wilson) 2 KILLARNEY; 11.2 (McCarten) 3 Seventeen started: When the field had settled down Workman had charge and led into the straight ahead of Chomosh, Auda, Trcvallion, Teppo, Lucre and Killarney. From a sharp tussle passing the Lcger Trevallion emerged, took command and going 'on won nicely by three lengths. Time, lmin 23sec. Second Division: PANOLA; 10.6 (Pike) ...... 1 COOLMINT; 8.3 (Coutts) .... 2 CELTIC; 9.5 (McLachlan) .. 3 Sixteen started. The Abbott took up the role of pacemaker from Mintage, Panola and Eanwortk. The Abbott showed the way home and appeared a likely winner from Panola, Coolmint and Celtic but Panola put in a welltimed run and gained the verdict by four lengths. Time, lmin 25:}sec. Owing to the suspension of W. Duncan, the Victorian champion lightweight jockey, for a month for interference in the Sires Produce Stakes at Randiwick yesterday, a new rider will be required for Tho Dimmer in the Sydney Cup on Monday. Bartlo will probably receive the mount as tho latter’s mount, Tregilla, is not likely to start in the Cup. The sporting writer, Cardigan, in the Sunday Guardian, says that Ammon Ra, the winner of the Sires Produce Stakes, proved himself quite as good as his New Zealand admirers claimed him to be. Finishing very determinedly there is little doubt he will make a name for himself as a three-year-old.
