Carpenters Demand Jobs on Central School

FLEA BEFORE UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE. Tlic Palmerston North branch of the New Zealand Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners wrote to the Palmerston North Unemployment Committee yesterday stating that at a recent meeting it was unanimously decided that the tradesmen use all endeavours to sec that local carpenters be employed on the repair work at the Central school. Many carpenters were gt present doing unskilled work under the No. 5 scheme. Further, the carpenters protested against the practice of adding to the cost of such works by paying Wanganui carpenters special allowances when away from Wanganui.

Mr Nash (chairman) stated that he had communicated with the Minister and that that official had promised to forward, a reply as quickly as possible. Mr J. Hodgens: We as a city are rather a big contributor to the Wanganui Education Board’s funds, and should receive consideration in such a matter as this. To finalise discussion it was decided to write to the Wanganui board, pointing out the committee’s feelings in the matter.
