Good Performances Recorded at Wanganui Athletic Meeting

NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 31. The Wanganui-Taranaki Centre athletic championships were held on Saturday afternoon and night. The club championship banner was won by New Plymouth with 5S points, Hawcra scoring 55, Stratford 47 and Wanganui 24. Three competitors achieved New Zealand standard, G. Sullivan (New Ply* mouth) in two events. His broad jump was 22ft. 2in. and hop, step and jump 45ft. sin. D. Evans (Taihapc) reached standard, 51 l-ssec., in his heat of the 440 yards and improved to 50 4-5 in the final. Stan Lay threw the javelin 28ft. more than the standard throw, being 203 ft.
Several centre records wore broken. S. A. (New Plymouth) ran 220 yards in 22 4-sscc, A. J. Darby (Wanganui) won the 440 hurdles in sDscc, G. Sullivan exceeded the record in the broad jump and F. E. Gillivcr established a record of sft. 7in. in the high jump. F. Barraclough’s pole vault 9ft. Sin., Lay’s javelin throw and the mile relay teams race won by Wanganui in 3min. 51 l-ssec. were all centre records. The mile was a magnificent race. O. N. Boswell (Ncw r Plymouth) defeated the Australian and New'Zealand champion and world’s grass track record holder, R. A. Rose, in 4min. 34sce.
