Obituary
MR. JOHN DRUMMOND, Tho death, occurred on Thursday of Mr John Drummond, an old identity of tho Dannovirke district. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 185*1, tho Into Mr Drummond was educated in Perthshire and came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship King of Italy in 1860. Landing in Auckland, the family soon after settled in Hawke’s Bay, where Mr Drummond took a course in engineering and later removed to Dannovirke, whero ho conducted a largo engineering business on his own account. In 1901 ho sold tho goodwill of this business and entered into partnership iu the hardware line, tho business being carried on by a son when tho deceased gentleman retired some years ago. Mr Drummond occupied tho Mayoral chair from 1897 to May, 1902. He was also associated with tho Hincmoa Tennis Club, Danncvirkc Golf Club and Bowling Club, of each of which he was at ouo time president and had been elected a life member. He was also vice-president of tho Dannovirke Orchestral Society, a member of tho Masonic Order anil ot the foresters Lodge, Napier. In his earlier days the deceased gentleman took a keen inter ost in military matters. Ho was a sergeant in the P. Battery at Napier, and fur a time captain of the Dannovirke .Rifles and Licut.-Colonel commanding the sth Wellington Battalion. In ISB3 ho married Miss McLeod, of ‘‘Woodside,” Onga Onga, Hawke’s Buy, who is left to mourn her loss besides live soils and two daughters. The eldest son, William (Captain) Drummond, who toon part iu the Great War, died iu the epidemic of 1918, the surviving sons being Dr. John Drummond, of Durban (South Africa), Messrs David, Leslie and Lindsay, of Dannovirke, and James, wlio resides in Napier, while the daughters are Mrs W. Hudson, of Argylo East, and Miss M. Drummond, who resides at home.
