Dannevirke

FARMERS’ UNION

SOUTHERN HAWKE'S BAY EXECUTIVE

A meeting of the Southern Hawke’s Bay executive Of the Earners’ Union was held at Danncvirke on Thursday afternoon, when Air. E. A. Thompson presided in the temporary absence of the president (Mr. J. Livingston).

The Weber Babbit Trust Association advised that it had been decided to push on with the original idea for the formation of a separate rabbit board comprising the Weber county, and in view of this it was not the intention of the board to appoint a delegate to attend a meeting in Dannevirke to consider forming a board for Southern Hawke’s Bay. After some discussion a proposal to urge that the Act be amended to allow rabbit associations to be formed under the existing boards, such associations to have the power to collect Tates, was defeated by five votes to four.

Tlie Otawhao branch forwarded two remits for consideration: (1) That the Government be urged to take steps to economise and so reduce the cost of living; and (2) that the Government go into the fertiliser question with the object of reducing the price. After some discussion it was decided, in connection with Temit No. 1, to ask the Dominion executive to circularise all branches, urging them to act in concert in a refusal to buy fertilisers at present prices. With regard to the first Temit, it was decided to hold the matter over, as the Dominion executive was already moving in that direction.

The socretaiy reported that a letter had been received from Mr. W. J. Poison, M.P., postponing his visit to Dannevirke until after the holidays.

Two remits were forwarded from the Norsewood branch. The first, “that the Dannevirke County Council be eommended for the lead it had taken in an endeavour to reduce overhead costs by reductions in salaries, ” brought a strong protest against its adoption from the chairman, who disagreed with the council’s manner of bringing about the reduction: Major McDonnell thought the County Council should be left to manage its own affairs; they spent too much time in criticising the actions of that body. Mr. F, Stratford drew attention to the fact that a resolution had been passed at the last meeting urging public bodic3 to Teduee expenditure by reducing costs. Mr. E. S. Chadwick did not think the Dominion executive could have approached the council, as the resolution had been passed as a remit to bo considered at the February meeting. Mr. McLean also considered that the matter was one for the County Council alone, the chairman having reiterated his refusal In endorse the resolution, and the remit was received. The second remit, pretesting against .14/- per day being paid for labour under the unemployment scheme, was also received, it being considered that it was better to wait until full particulars of the scheme were received.
