Rongotea

SMOKE CONCERT.

A smoke concert to wind up the activities of the Rongotea Boxing Club for the year, was held on Monday evening in the Coronation Hall. There was an excellent attendance.

Mir A. Burgess, on behalf of the club, proposed the royal toast, was Heartily responded to. Mr J. Irnric, on behalf of the club, presented the instructor (Mr L. Poupard) with a very handsome tobacco pouch with an engraved gilt plate, as a token of the esteem in which he is held by the boys of the school. Mr Poupard suitably responded. 1 1 Mr Burgess, on behalf of the club committee, also presented Mr Poupard with a beautiful oak clock, suitably engraved, and to Mr S. Poupard a dres-sing-table companion. Mr Poupard and liis son suitably responded. Mr Poupard congratulated all the boys on the honours they had won during tho last year. He felt very proud to say that two of the boys had won championship honours at tho Manawatu Competitions, namely Innes and Jacobs. He was sure that .if they only stuck to the game and supported the club in the future as they have done in the past, they will d.o even better. He thanked the boys and the committee for the willing support they had given him during the three years he had been instructor.

Mr Poupard then proposed the toast of the President (M-r Burgess). The club had much to bo thankful for in the way Mr Burgess had carried out. his duties as president and ho ‘hoped to sec him continue to hold that office next year. . Mr Burgess, in responding to the toast, thanked the club for the honour best owed upon him in electing him president, He had been holding that office for the past three years and he thought it was only right that, someone else lake Ills place, but if the ( > still wanted him to carry on next year lie would be only too proud to do so. Mr Morcolm proposed the health oi Mr Eades, the secretary of the club, and thanked him on behalf of the.committee for the valuable services he had rendered since he had held that office. Mr Eades suitably responded. Mr Burgess then proposed the health of the boxing boys, the boys suitably responding. A collection was taken up for the benefit of Mr Hepburn, the well-known boxer, who is at present in ill-health. The health of the committee was then proposed by Mr Burgess. He said that he would not. have been able to carry out his duties so well, nor would the club have been so successful had it not had such a good committee to back it up. He thought they were the best crowd of men he had ever workedwith.

Mr C. Bade, on behalf of the boys, proposed :th e health of the instructor, Mr Poupard. He said he came down to the school in all weathers: used jhis own car. his own benzine, his own time and looked for nothing in return. Mr Poupard, in replying, said that he was sure anything he did for the boys in the war of boxing he did because ho was supported so well every night classes were hold and ho took a very keen interest in the sport for the sport’s sake. He was sure that anything he had done had been a greater pleasure to him than they could imagine. w Mr Morcolm proposed the health oi tho outside supporters. He was sure that if it was not for the splendid help of the supporters rendered to the club in tho way of trophies and donations the club would nor have gone very far. Mr E. Amon proposed the health of the press. The representatives suitably responded. The gathering dispersed to the strains of Auld Lang Syne.
