IMPROVEMENTS SUGGESTED. HUMILIATING RESTRICTIONS. "Wliilo gratified at the appointment of a v trade commissioner in Eastern Canada in the person of Mr. J. W. Collins, the New Zealand Tourist Leagues feels that the time has arrived when better representation is required on the Pacific Coast of the American Continent. Both for prospective trade openings and the attraction of tourists, it is felt that at either San Francisco or Los Angeles, New Zealand should have a full time agent. The league has accordingly directed the attention of the lion, dc la Perrelle, Minister of the Tourists and Industries Department, to the matter. i Another matter taken up with the Minister in this connection is the anomaly of the mail ageuts on tho fcrans-Pacific mail steamers being subsidised by the Railway Department. The league considers that the giving of information, and tho preparation of itineraries by these -men .should be under the' direction of the Government Tourist Bureau, and that the TourisS Department representatives who meet, • oversea vessels on arrival at Auckland and IVcllington, .should be replaced by railway passenger agents. The attention of the'Minister has been drawn to certain advertisements, presumably of the Railway Department, appearing in the Press recently .in which the Government Tourist Bureau’s name was omitted, but two ■ private companies were mentioned, where iu- : formation and tickets could be obtain, cd.

The Minister has been asked to take up With tho Miaigber of External Affairs, the handicap placed on foreign tourists :by having to put down -a deposit of £lO before being allowed to land in the country. Many of these visitors, university professors, journalists, and business men. carrving proper passports, have recorded the humiliation they felt at the regulation and the manner in which it is enforced. This restriction, says the league, is doing the Dominion harm in .foreign lands.
