Rising Trade Trend Looked for in India
CALCUTTA. Thoughtful observations upon the present commercial position in India were made by Rat Bahadur Ba-drias Gocnkha presiding over this year’s annual meeting of the Marwari Association in Calcutta. The Marwari,s arc tho most influential class of Indian merchants. Premising that the past rear had been a disastrous one for Indian trade, Mr Goenpha said: “'The only redeeming feature at the present moment is that, looking upon tho intensity of the recent decline in prices one might reasonably hope that the bottom has been well-nigh reached and that better conditions will prevail in tho near future. The present, crisis shows clearly the extent to which we arc dependent for our economic welfare on foreign consumers of our raw materials, a factor over which wc have little or no control. “'The country,” he continued, “is passing through one of the most critical periods in its history. . . I firmly believe that a fresh installment of reforms will be given to the country bringing us nearer our ideal and I am equally sure that under the new reforms the interests of influential minorities like ourselves, who have large stakes in the country, will be absolutely safeguarded.
