SHOOTING TARGETS
A PROBLEM IN PATRIOTISM The ancient city of Trondhjem, the old ecclesiastical centre of Scandinavia, and the gate to “the land of the midnight sun,” is in a dilemma. There are a few modest shooting galleries in the town, and the targets have the shape of figures portraying prominent personages from the old German Kaiser era, such as Wilhelm 11., exCrown Prince Wilhelm, the King of Saxony, the Grand Duke of Baden, Bismarck, etc., all in full-dress parade. Some patriotic Germans, misunder standing the situation, and believing that the shooting galleries were hothouses for serious anti-German —and especially for anti-royalist—propa-ganda, have sent an ultimatum to the tourist organisations of Trondhjem to the effect that if the targets are not removed immediately the city of Trondhjem will be boycotted by all German tourists this summer. The associations have now made overtures to the proprietors of the shooting ranges, only to receive the surprising reply that the targets were all “made in Germany.”
