PERSONALITIES

WITH THE TROOPERS The Great War concluded in 1918, but though the Armistice definitely terminated hostilities, it did not end the friendships made in the trenches. To-day, as in the dire days of strife, New Zealand still sees its corps gather in annual and hearty reunions. Last evening saw another such happy gathering when the men of the Wellington Mounted Rifles met to renew old associations. Foremost at the gathering was Hare*.* Bennett, whose work as secretary of the committee has been mainly responsible for the continued success of the functions, evidence of which was shown by the fact that about 200 were present. Harold’s reception at the hands—and voices—of the regiment last evening was eloquent testimony of their regard for him. He left these shores early in the war as a regimental quartermaster and was stationed in Egypt before sailing with the Anzacs to Gallipoli where he gained a commission. Following the Palestine campaign, he was ordered back to New Zealand to command a reinforcement, but the AnnisJ.ice intervened. Although not born in Palmerston North Harold came here so early in his life that he can claim to be a native. He was educated at Terrace End School, P.N.8.H.5., and Wellington College. In business he is one of the “Co.s” in the famous bookselling firm which bears his father’s name.

Cr. A. Campbell was yesterday unanimously rc-clcctcd chairman of the Oroua County Council.
