Auckland Bookmakers Pay £IOO License Fee

BOTH IN A BIG WAY. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, last Night, Two bookmakers who were caught carrying on business on ft largo scale during the Easter holidays were each fined £IOO by Mr E. C. Cutton, S.M.. in tho Polico Court this morning. Thoy were Archibald Anderson (29) who admitted using his premises situated at Hobson street as a common, gaming houso on April 21st last, and William Alfred Mackay (33), who pleaded guilty to a similar offence on April 10th, committed at 1, Newton arcade. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said when Detective-Sergeant McHugh and Detective Naldcr visited MaeKav’s premises, they heard him quoting “doubles” over the phone. In 16 minutes, the detectives took 16 bets to the value of £l4 5/- from people over the telephone. Another client rang up and wanted to lay £IOO but realising that he waa speaking to someone other than tha accused, he discontinued his conversation. It was evident that Mac Kay had been doing business in a large way. In 1927, ho was fined £75 for bookmaking and in June, 1928, and May last, £75 and £IOO respectively* for keeping a common gaming house. “This man is also in business on a; fairly largo scale,” said tho detectivesergeant, regarding Anderson. Anderson’s premises were equipped with a’ telephone, betting cards and betting slips—evidence that he was doing business on a large scale. He was no stranger to the Court, as in August* 1927, he was fined £25 for assisting in tho management of a common gaming house, and in June, 1928 and December, 2925, he was penalised to the extent of £75 for keeping a common gaming house.
