Housing Problem Disturbs Ireland
NO SHORTAGE. BELFAST. During the last six years no fewer than 24,623 houses have been built iu Northern Ireland, The magnitude of this achievement can be grasped better when it is Stated that these houses are sufficient to accommodate the entire population of the six largest towns in the province outside Belfast. Tho amount spent in subsidies td builders by the Government is approximately £1,500,000. In anuary £74,000 was advanced, representing subsidies at the fate Or £IOO apiece on 740 houses. Local authorities have subsidised builders on a generous scale. The time has Conte when it may bo said that there is no shortage of houses in Northern Ireland. Yet one difficulty remains, since builders in fixing rents have made no allowance for the subsidies received. The gross cost has been taken When determining the economic ratal with the rsult that although m&ny of tk new houss aro vacant, they aro beyond the purses of the working class.
