SHANNON

From Our Own Correspondent. Mr and Mrs Snelling, Alangaone, spent the week-end at Ashhurst. Mr L. O’Connor, Auckland, is staying with his sister, Mrs F. H, Taylor, Ballance street.

Mothers’ Union. A meeting of the Shannon branch, of the Mothers’ Union was held in the Parish hall with a largo attendance. Mrs Waring-Taylor presided. The Rev. G. A. Young opened proceedings with a service, after which afternoon tea was dispensed by tho hostesses, Mrs Bass, Miss M. Easton and Mrs F. Jamieon, junr. Mrs H. C. Jones then gave a very interesting address on tho work of the Mothers’ Union at Hastings, which was followed by a reading by Mrs WaringTaylor. It was decided to hold the next meeting on April 8. For this afternoon, the chairman of the school committee, Mr A. E. Hyde, in conjunction with Messrs Wilkinson and Christie have made arrangements to broadcast Rear-Admiral Byrd's speech for the children of tho local school in the Maoriland theatre.

During tho week-end a working bee was held in the Domain when several members of the Athletic Club helped prepare the cycle track for its coating of bitumen.

On Saturday afternoon, a carload of local bowlers who were proceeding to Palmerston North met with an accident. The car was approaching Tokomaru and was close to William’s bend. A lorry was proceeding towards Wellington and Mr Radford the driver of tho car, pulled over , into the rough metal, overturning it. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt, though Messrs E. Butt and J. T. Bovis returned to Shannon.

Borough News. The question of rental of the Domain by, the Horowhenua • Rugby District council again cropped up at the council meeting. The secretary pointed out, that owing to the Bebbington Shield having gone out of tho district, no representative fixture would be played in Shannon. Last season the return for club games in Shannon was £lB, out of which £lO was paid for rent, £4 for gatekeepers, £2 10s for advertising, leaving a balance of £1 10s. The letter requested that the council reconsider tho question of a ten per cent charge on gross takings, also what charge would be made for the use of the ground by tho Shannon Football Club if no charge for admission was made. The council decided to adhere to the charge of £lO per annum, but that if no charge or collection is made at tho gate, the local club be granted the use of the ground free of charge. Councillor Anderson occupied his seat at the recent Borough Council meeting in spite of his threat to resign. The Mayor (Mr E. Butt) stated ho was pleased to see Cr. Anderson had reconsidered his decision. Cr Anderson became somewhat heated when it was suggested by Cr Hyde that he had got a wrong impression of his position. Cr Hyde said it was an insinuation against tho Mayor and councillors for him to come and ask for fair play and he considered an apology was due. Cr Anderson replied somewhat heatedly “You have your remedy. That is the apology you will get.” The discussion lapsed shortly after.

The question of sealing the main highway through the borough was again brought up at tho council meeting. 833 square yards have already been laid down at an approximate cost of 9Jd per yard for trial purposes with Col fix, and it was on the strength of this that the matter was re-introduced. The town clerk stated that the approximate width of road in Ballance street was 75 feet and in Plimmer terrace 54 feet, The cost would bo £493 10s lOd, plus £32 3s for work done. With a £2 for £1 subsidy, the cost to the council would be £164.

Cr Hydo stated that on looking through the expenditure he found the council had spent £l9O on material and £l4O for metal on these roads. On these figures there would still bo £l3O for other roads.

It was decided that tho Borough Council go into ways and means of surfacing the main highway from the Police station to tho Albion hotel at the next meeting. Croquet.

Another good attendance was registered on IVednesday afternoon in the 20minutes competition for a trophy presented by Airs Blaikie. The scores were as follow: Mesdames Picard 15, Lengward 13, Mason 11, Pallant 11, Bovis 9, Tait 8, Brann 8, Blaikie 7. The president, Mrs Bovis, handed Airs Picard, tho winner, a dainty afternon tea cup and saucer and plate. In the inter-club matches, Shannon was defeated by Takaro in the final round by 77 points to 70. The scores were as follow, all games being unfinished, Shannon being mentioned first: —Airs. Mason drew with Aliss Tennant 17 all, Airs. Snelling lost to Airs. Ball 16—24, Alesdames Picard and Roach defeated Alesdames Usmar and AlacFarlane 20—16, Alesdames LengWard and Bovis lost to Alesdames Lyall and Trevor 17 —20.

The Shannon Club finished fourth in the competition out of 12 teams competing, being only one point behind the Takaro Club which occupied third place. In the competitions being held on the local green, the following results have been recorded. For Airs Butt’s trophy, handicap singles, Airs Blaikie (9) defeated Airs Bovis (10) 26 —21.

In the handicap doubles for Mrs Bovis’ trophy, Alesdames Mason (72) and Blaikie (9) defeated Alesdames Snelling (74) and Leng-Ward ,(9)

Golf Club. On Thursday evening the annual meeting of the Shannon Golf Club was held in the council chambers when Mr A. Blackwood, president, was in the chair. The balance sheet showed that the season commenced with a credit of £ll 19s lid. With outstanding subscriptions £lO, the receipts for the season were £57 7s Id, with an expenditure of £46 7s Id, thus showing a possible credit balance of £l9 13s 9d, with an actual credit on the season’s workings of £8 13s 9d. In the president’s report, Mr Blackwood commented on the increased membership. The thanks of the club were

due to Messrs Stern Bros, who made it possiblo for the. club to play on their property and who had done great work in preparing the course. Credit was also duo to Messrs McKenzie, Saxon and Jonc3 who had all given able assistance. A number of alterations to the courso had been made, which would be of benefit to the courso and the members. The club’s thanks were also duo to the ladies, who had never failed to provide refreshments, and to the honorary secretary, Mr A. H. Morgan. Inter-club matches woro played against Levin, Foxton, Otaki and Hokowkitu.

The institution of the Buckley Cup for week-end play was a good innovation and was keenly contested. The winners were as follows: D. Saxon and C. Pedersen (twice), C. Stevenson, C. Stern, F. Tregurtha, H. Saxon, A. Morgan, H. Stern and A. Saxon (once).

The election of officers resulted: President, W. B. King; vice-president, W. H. McKenzie, secretary and treasurer, A. H. Morgan; captain, A. Blackwood; vice-captain, C. Stern; handicap committee, captain, vice-captain and secretary; committee, Messrs 11. C. Jones, C. Stevenson, J. D. Campbell, H. Stern, W. Goodwin, C. Stern, Mrs Morgan, Miss Sinclair, Mrs T. Moynihan, Miss J. Goodwin and Mrs Pedersen; ground superintendent, Mr C. Stern. It was decided that the subscriptions for ladies and juniors remain tho same as last year. The men’s subscriptions will be increased to 30s with power to levy up to 10s if funds are insufficient. The following new members were elected:—Mesdames Mark, Guerin, W, King, Stevenson, Bovis, Henry, Jones, Cole, Hudson and Messrs Alec White, K. Henry, K. Carter and H. Taylor.

An invitation was received from the Levin Golf Club for its opening day on March 22, It was decided that opening day be on Saturday April 5, and that invitations bo forwarded to neighbouring clubs. At the conclusion of tho meeting, members were entertained at . a social evening given by Messrs J. D. Campbell and L. Mark in honour of the former being elected a member of the “hole-in-one” club.
