ANGLO-SCOTS PLAY POINTLESS DRAW IN GREAT RUGBY GAME
England’s Unlucky Day A BRILLIANT HALF-BACK United Press Association, —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Sunday, 11 p.m. LONDON, March 15.
At Twickenham the annual Rugby match for tko Calcutta Cup England versus Scotland resulted in a pointless draw.
There is a possibility of France reaching the summit of her sporting ambitions by winning the international championship in Rugby football, for if she beats Wales at Paris on Easter Monday she will have three .’ictories while England and Ireland Lave only two each. To-day’s pointless draw at Twickenham before 00,000 spectators, including the Duke of York and Mr Ramsay McDonald, was one of the hardest- fought games ever seen at England’s headquarters.
The game was full of excitement from the kick off to the ‘final whistle. It was not a great game compared with many other internationals for the threequarter backs rarely got going, but there was a tremendous struggle between the two finest packs of forwards. The tackling throughout was fierce and relentless.
England was unfortunate not to win, for the greater part of the ga-mo was played in the Scottish half of the ground and sho was within an ace of scoring several times.
England’s half backs Sobey and S'pong, w-ho are members of the team which is visiting Australia' and New Zealand, wero in fine form and continually opened up the game, but the threequarters could not carry' on the good work. Sobey made the most brilliant effort of the match when he broke away from the scrummage on the half way line and swerved and dodged through the bewildered Scotsmen only to be tackled a yard from the line.
