Attempt to Lower Record Abandoned
WANGANUI TO WELLINGTON W. Collins, of Palmerston North, a well-known road cyclist who is virtually scratch man in all tho races conducted under the auspices of the Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, made an atttempt on the unpaccd record for the Wanganui to Wellington trip yesterday but, after making good time as far as Otaki, was compelled to abandon the effort owing to a strong southerly and heavy rain. Setting out unpaccd from Wanganui at 7.30 yesterday morning, the Palmerston cyclist was 10 minutes ahead of Wright's time at Levin and at Otaki, had still three minutes to spare, the official checks on tho journey rcadas follow:
Wanganui (depart) 7.30 a.m.; Turakina, 8.101; Bulls, 8.53; Sandon. 9,3-}; Foxton, 10.6; Levin, 10.52; Otaki 11.39 a.m.
The present record for the distance is held by Stan Wright, of Wellington, w'ho put up tho fast time of 7hrs. 16mins,. in December of last year. The PalmOrstonian intends to make another effort -when weather conditions are favourable.
