Cattle Yards Wanted for Karere Station
DEPUTATION OF SETTLERS. Consideration of a proposal to erect suitable cattle yards at Karere station was promised a deputation of Karere farmers yesterday by Mr A. W. Beasley, district railway engineer, and Mr J. Brown, district traffic manager. Tho deputation was arranged by Messrs J. Linklater and J. A. Nash, M’s.P., and consisted of Messrs R. D. Knight, H. Voss, D. Rowland, R. Tanner, D. Buchanan, D. B. McEwan and G. -Bell. Mr Linklater, who introduced the deputation pointed out that the question of providing suitable cattle trucking yards at Karere had been before the department for some time. There was a large number of stud breeders in the district and at present considerable difculty was experienced in trucking stock. Sheep yards had been erected but the settlers required a loading ramp for horses aud cattle. As an instance of the amount of trucking done from Karere, Mr Linklater mentioned Mr R. D. Knight who had paid £216 in freights last ye-ar. Mr Bell remarked that some breeders would not enter for shows under the present conditions as too much work was involved in loading the stock. Mr Buchanan stated that at present animals had to be sent to Longburn and breeders had to accept “pot luck.” Despite the lack of facilities, however, he had on one morning seen 15 truck loads of stud stock leave Karere. In reply, Mr Brown stated that a yard would have to bo provided both tor horses and cattle. The estimated cost of building cattle yards with a 12 or 15 foot raeo would be about £47.
