How They Ran

Potoaform Holds Favourite. There was no hesitation on the part of backers in making Leisure an oddson favourite for the Maiden. She was entrusted with £827 of tho pool, as against £349 on the winner, Potoaform. Several others were evenly backed to a lesser extent. Leisure and Potoaform began best, the latter, then drawing to the front from the favourite, Alias Cobham, Coalbag and Pont d’Or. The leading pair were together again crossing the top with a three lengths' interval to Miss Cobham, which was followed by Coalbag, Valma and Pont d’Or. Once into the straight, Potoaform held a slight advantage again over Leisure, with Miss Cobham hanging on well behind them. Gray had no apparent difficulty in keeping his mount together and ho beat the favourite by three-quarters of a length, with Miss Cobham half a length away. There was an interval to Valma, then close together, came Rewatoa, Myola and Coalbag. The winner has been unlucky on several occasions and t.he victory was well received. Miss Cobham showed fair promise and should win, well placed. Leisure’s performance was good enough for a win in most circumstances, as the time indicates.

Gray Again. For the Stewards’ Handicap, liuanui was made a decisive first fancy, but he was beaten out of a divideud by Otairi and Count Palatine. Tho favourite carried £7OO, Keddar £509 and Otairi £471. Keddar broke tho tapes, being followed out of the straight by Ctairi, Consent and Joy Bird. On the approach to the back straight, Otairi took up the running from Consent, Keddar and Ruanui, with Habit putting on the pace on the outside of them. Otairi, Consent and Habit were in lino passing the five furlongs peg, with three lengths to Keddar and Ruanui and Paitonu, in front of Joy Bird and Count Palatine, a further two lengths in the rear. Crossing the top, Otairi and Consent were still in company, clear of Habit and Keddar, while the favourite which had been allowed to run along quietly, began to improve his position. Otairi was first into tno straight from a bunch. Ruanui at once challenged, and Count Palatine came out of tho ruck fairly wide out and Paitonu got a run on the rails behind the leader. Otairi held on his course, however, and beat the fast-finishing Count Palatine by one and a-half lengths, with the favourite a further half-length away. Paitonu was fourth, then came Consent, Habit, Joy Bird and Keddar, while Fine Acre was at the tail.

Democratic Good Enough. On tho strength of his Taranaki success on tho fiat over 7 furlongs, Red Fuchsia was installed a warm favourite for the Hurdles, carrying £674, as compared with £484 on Democratic and £4lO on Beaumont. The only absentee was Vivo. When the tapes were skied, Beaumont, Borsalene and Red Fuchsia were first away, with Panorama installing himself as runner-up to Beaumont as they crossed tho top. Entering the straight tho first time Borsalene was just behind the leader, with Red Fuchsia and Panorama well up. Past the stand, tho order rvas Beaumont and Borsalene, Panorama, Democratic, Red Fuchsia and Jokeform. The last-named ran up to second place running to tho back, followed by Borsalene and Democratic and an interval of 4 lengths to the favourite. Once in line in the straight, Borsalene had a slight advantage of Beaumont, with Democratic and Red Fuchsia threatening danger. Democratic stayed on best to beat Red Fuchsia, which finished very fast with a late run, by a short length. Borsalene was only a head further away, Beaumont was fourth; then came Panorama and Jokeform. First Ruler tail® a the field all the way. A Good Frice.

Of tho 11 starters for the Juvenile Handicap, Jenny Diver (£793) and Equitant (£742) were selected by the public as the most likely to show a profit. The former was slow to begin and was never prominent. Arisus was first to show up from Treasury and Isa but Autopay quickly took np the ruining from Isa, Rose Lupin, Arisus,

Equitant and Treasury. Roao Lupin ran up to the leader as they swung into the straight, with -Isa, Arisus and Equitant close handy. These three ail challenged Autopay, which lasted long enough to win by a short n*ck from Rose Lupin. Arisus and Equitant were about on terms, one and a-half lengths further back, with Treasury, Bello Star and Jenny Diver at the head of this others. The winner responded well to pressure in the straight and the second horse impressed as an early wi/ner. The scratchings were First Money, Blue Paper, Hard Words, Royal Finance and Paiko. Well Anticipated Result. For the Cup, ten were saddlfed up. Piuthair, Orazone and Mister Gamp were the non-starters. Big interests and some local sentiment were the means of installing In the Shade ‘is prime fancy on the tote. The Papa-kura-traincd candidate’s share of the big pool was £916. Corinax, with much better public credentials, had £7lB and Yoma was supported to the extent of £450. . Corinax, The Hawk, Taneriri and Cashier showed out first and once fairly into the back straight, the leaders were Corinax, Taneriri, Seatown (putting on steam), Cashier and The Hawk. Seatown was in front crossing the top from Corinax, The Ha's.!:, Taneriri, Cashier, Yoma and Shrewd, tho last-named making the pace on the outer, and having a slight advantage of Corinax as they entered the straigut the first time, with Seatown and Tho Hawk in close attendance. As they swept past the finishing lino the first time, in close order, they were Shrewd, Seatown, Corinax, Tho Hawk, Yosma, Taneriri and Cashier in line, In the Shade, Bright Glow and Kilorell. Two furlongs further on, Shrewd had a 2J lengths advantage of Corinax, with Seatown, In the Shade (coming up fast), Yoma and The Hawk all going well. Half a milo from home tho favourite had charge from Shrewd, Seatown, Yoma, Corinax, Bright Glow and The Hawk. The favourite was a length clear of Yoma crossing the top, with Shrewd and Seatown, Corinax, Cashier and The Hawk coming again on the outside. The order as they lined up for tho run homo was In the Shade, Yoma, Corinax and The Hawk. Corinax issued a strong challenge but In the Shade carried too many guns and won by H lengths, with The Hawk a neck behind Corinax. Yoma waß fou&h. Shrewd, Seatown, Bright Glow, Taneriri were close together and C.ashier and Kilorell were tailed off. Had Corinax not lost position on thfe turn before the straight, which necessitated his coming round three others another tale might have been told. However, the winner was showing no signs of weakening when the pressure was applied, but actually increased his advantage. The Hawk ran a good race and Yoma’s performance was also very meritorious. None of the others were noteworthy.

A Poor Assay. Dolomite provided H. Gray with his fourth win of the day in five mounts. The imported horse was second favourite with £484 as against £571 on Uo first fancy, Goldlike. The only other runner inquired for was Thrift. At the release of the handle, Soviet, Auctioneer and Warfille got in one another’s way and Latakia, on the extreme outside, took up tho running from Joyspear, Dolomite, My Own, Auctioneer, The Warden and Warfille. At the entrance to the back stretch, Latakia and Warfille were the joint pilots, with Dolomite lying fourth. The last-named was then eased. He moved up again on the home turn, getting the rails and into the straight, was handy to Latakid and The Warden. Dolomite was kept up to his task and won meritoriously by half a length from Latakia, which was one and a-half lengths better than Joyspear. My Own was fourth; Warfille, Auctioneer and Goldlike next. The favourite was never in the picture, it evidently being his off day. Dolomite is a very solid horse and it will take a good weight to stop him. Favourites Beaten Back. The winner of the Petre Hack turned up in Limosin, which paid the best price of the day. The start was a bad one, those chiefly affected adversely being Abbey Queen, Paiko and Wild Country, while Cadland, a pronounced favourite, also lost a couple of lengths. Evening Hero, Perennis and Limosin were the favoured ones from the starting line and when they had settled down, those three were on terms, followed by Joy Germ, Green Acre and Tenacre. Crossing the top, Limosin, Perennis, Joy Germ, Tenacre, Evehing Hero and Cadland was the order and into the straight, the leaders were Limosin, Tenacre, Joy Germ, Perfcnnis and the favourite. Limosin was not troubled to win from Tenacre by ovft a length, with Cadland two lengths further in the rear. Green Acre was a fair fourth, Perennis right up fifth, with Zarene, Paiko and Joy Germ next. Zareno, the second favourite, gave a veiy disappointing display and Cadland did not run up to expectations, even accounting for his handicap at tti* start. Cimabue the Sprint.

11l started in the Plying Handicap. Silvermine (£1124) and Eidgemount £828) were the elect of the backers, but Cimabue drawing the inner nmVbla got away well and wore down the others in the straight to win by over a length. Eidgemount, Arikinui, Silvermine, Cimabue, Freehold and Malayai left in that order when the field was despatched, Arikinui taking Silvermine, Eidgemount, Cimabue and Moa Bird at the half-mile stop. Into the straight Arikinui was still showing the way to Silvermine rvith Cimabue coming fast on the outside. The last-named held the straight courso and beat Arikinui by one and a-quarter lengths. The favourite was only half a head further back with Eidgemount fourth, then came Moa Bird, Freehold, Benzora and Malayan.
