MANAWATU XI. EASILY DEFEATS POVERTY BAY

156 Runs Lead GALLICHAN DOES HAT TRICK AND TAKES SIX WICKETS FOR 30 RUNS HAWKE CUP RETAINED The second challenge match for the Hawko Cup, which commenced on Boxing day, was brought to a quick conclusion on Saturday, when Manawatu easily disposed of tho Poverty Bay eleven for 121 and retained the trophy by 156 runs. It was Gallichan’s mate!! the home trundler not only doing th| hat trick against the visitors, but succeeding in capturing six wickets for SO runs. When play was resumed on Saturday morning Manawatu, with a lead of S 4 on the first innings, had partially completed tho second visit to the crease and had five down for 158 for the previous day’s play. Tho total was increased to 193 before the last man was disposed of and the homesters had set Poverty Bay tho task of finding 278 to tvin. , Tho challengers set about the problem in a fighting spirit and at tho luncheon adjournment their chances were rosy with one for 54. But with the fall) of . tho first few wickets, on resumption, a rot set in ,and the visitors Were all out for 121. Onglcy, Gallichan, McViear and O’Keefe made the bowling difficult all tho time, but full credit must go to Gallichan for his outstanding performance —one which must .be unique in the history of Hawko Cup games. Manawatu’s Lead The outfield was slow and the wicket goft when Manawatu resumed its innings under improving weather conditions. Tho total was 158 for fivo wickets, Gallichan being 16 and Spring 8 when O’Connor and James opened. Gallichan began cautiously and in four overs had only added an equal number of runs when ho was Tun out in attempting to snatch a single. Ongley, the captain, next partnered Spring, who had not yet increased his account from overnight. Tho latter started with a single and a shot for four off 0 ’Connor, while Ongley notched a single and followed this up with two more. Spring secured a run with a nice shot off O’Connor, but in an attempt to play the next he had his off stump lifted out of the ground and the telegraph showed 171 —7—14. Onglcy, junr., partnered his father ana further singles were added to make 180 appear in short time. Tho captain reached double figures off James; hut with 184 in hand, O’Connor crean bowled him, Ongly, junr., then being four. O’Keefe took centre to face the same trundler, playing out a maiden. Three similar overs followed and off James’ last ball in the fourth, Onglcy, junr., was clean bowled with his tally at six. Being joined by Pletchcr, O’Keefe opened after 11 minutes at the crease with a two. The same batsman brought 190 up by sending C. Dow to the rails. With tho fourth ball, however, the trundler sent down a yorker and O’Keefe had his stumps shattered. Fletcher had not faced the bowling at all, tho innings closing for 193 after 60 minutes’ play for the day. Poverty Bay’s Fight With 278 to get to annex tho cup, Poverty Bay sent Fraser and Robertson to the-crease to open against McVicar and Gallichan. Conditions were improving and the wicket was playing well at this stage. Fraser opened with a single through slips off McVicar a second over, two maidens following. Gallichan bowled three further maidens, Fraser then getting his second single off the last delivery and a,other from McVicar. Four more maidens were recorded before anything further resulted, Fraser then getting a three off Gallichan. The Manawatu men were fielding splendidly, and after 27 minutes, only six were on the board. The batsmen were both confident, Fraser shaping particularly well and scoring with nicely placed shots. O Keefe took over the leather from McVicar and commenced with a maiden, a single to Robertson coming off his second and bringing up 20 after 43 minutes. With a single added, Ongley, the captain, replaced Gallichan, four singles resulting. Robertson brought 30 up and shortly afterwards Fraser reached the twenties. McVicar came back again and play quietened. Seven had been notched when Ongley clean bowled Fraser, who was trying to pull one to'the boundary, at 23. His partner then had 15. Turvey commenced with a single to make tho tally 40, ond - runs then started to come moro quickly. Gallichan replaced McVicar nt the southern end for tho next over, Turvey getting a single, while the same player drove Ongley to tho. rails in the next. The luncheon adjournment was called with tho score at 54 for one wicket, Robertson being 20 and Turvey 12 at this stage. Visitors’ Collapse The wicket was beginning to show signs of wear and trickiness when Ga> lichan opened to Turvey. The second delivery beat the batsman all the way and only one came off the over. Both men added a single off Ongley and Turvey sent the same trundler to the rails and for a two off his succeeding deliveries. Sixty came up with tho last shot and the runs commenced to come faster. Turvey survived an appeal for being out of his crease, while Ongley had Robertson thinking at this stage. The latter brought 70 to tho board by driving Gallichan to tho tence, McVicar then taking over at the south end. . The visitors still wanted 200. Turpoy added runs with fine drives and ivcll placed shots off both trundlers, reaching 39 while his colleague was at 10. He secured a three with a splcniid cover drive. [Robertson was near|y stumped bv Norris off Gallichan, ;he following ball getting him on the Jody. He got in front of the next deivory and was out, 1.b.w., for 30, with ho total at 98. Turvey was supportd by Winter, the latter finding himelf ‘in difficulties with McVicar.. He irought the century up with a single, ollowing a run by Turvey. His secind came from hitting Gallichan up o mid-field. . McVicar, with the first iall of the over, then clean bowled im. Turvey was 45 when Reeve took ■entre, and the score was 301 for three rickets. The newcomer opened with a ingle, the play slowing down. Two lose singles were run and shortly fterwards Turvey skied Gallichan, IcVicar taking a beautiful running itcli. The retiring batsman received n ovation, having contributed 4S, inuding four boundaries. Bennett came i next with the telegraph showing )7. A maiden by McVicar followed

and the cx-Palmerstonian was called upon to face Gallichan. The first two balls got him tangled up and tho third saw his bails fly. There had been no alteration in the score and E. Dow came in for the sixth wicket stand with Reeves. Hat Trick Tho latter added two singles before Dow stood up to Gallichan. Tho first ball had the desired effect, and Poverty Bay had lost yet another batsman. The next to go to the crease was Cave, Reeves being fivo. Disaster follower! and the r.cw man returned immediately with his bails scattered. C. Dow t»ou supported Reeves, but failed to stoj. Gallichan from doing the hat trick, the first ball ..putting the issue beyond doubt. . Gallichan received an ovation —he had clean bowled three men in one over—and was congratulated oy his team mates. Eight'wickets were now' lost for 10V runs ami 169 were yet required to defeat Manawatu when James took centre. Only four had been added by Reeves (9) when Poverty Bay’s copes wore shattered, tho batsman Demg caught and bowled by McVicar with the tally at 113. The last wicket stand was made by O’Connor and James, the former opening briskly and adding eight in short time.
