47 Companies Represented

AMALGAMATED DAIRIES POLICY IS EXPOUNDED

DAIRY BOARD REVISION. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The first meeting of the New Zealand Dairy Council was held to-day 47 companies being represented. Mr Dynes Fulton, chairman of direc-' tors of the Amalgamated Dairies Ltd., presided. There were also present Mr W. Goodfellow and Messrs W. Grounds,' J. R. Corrigan and J. Dunlop, members of the Dairy Board and ths chairmen of 47 butter and cheese producing companies from all part of the Dominion whose ‘produce is being handled by ' Amalgamated Dairies Ltd. 1 The total quantity of produce represented by the gathering was valued at £6,500,000. The tonnage of produce amounted to butter, 31,000 tons; cheese, 11,000 tons. The Mayor (Mr G. A. Troup) extended a cordial welcome to the conference and wished it success in its deliberations. Mr W. Goodfellow said Amalgamated Dairies would continue its policy of cooperation with Tooley Street agents on exactly the same system as hitherto and would progressively open selling floors throughout the United Kingdom. These selling floors would receive small consignments direct from New Zealand ?,nd would receive supplementary sup* port from London stocks. The main objective of orderly marketing was to endeavour to lift tho price level to the highest possible average figure.. They, had no intention of endeavouring to extract from the market an artificial price. That was impossible. They could only endeavour to get the maximum price by close organisation and eliminating unnecessary profits between, the price paid by the retailer and the price paid to the producer. The second main objoctive to coordinate the marketing of Empire produce, •; • • la the election of directors to represent the North Island on the board of Amalgamated Dairies Messrs Grounds and J. G. Brechin were elected. To represent the South Island, Mr J. Fisher was elected by 11 votes to 9 cast for Mr C. T. McCallum.

It was unanimously resolved: "That this Dairy Council supports and ancourages the gradual development of the principle of free trade within the Empire. j “That the Government be asked to

prohibit the export of cheese, if waxed prior to 14 days after manufacture. . “That the Government be requested

to abolish tho appointment of their nominees to the Dairy Control Board.” It was also resolved that the Government be asked to remove the proprietory nominee from Hie Dairy Control Board.
