‘POLITICAL LEPER” WINS EVERY CLAIM
TOTAL DAMAGES £4,500. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Friday, 2 a.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 5. Five actions for defamation, arising out of the notorious “faked ballot box incident” at Labour headquarters, Sydney some 'years ago, were concluded here to-day . The plaintiff John Bailey, president of the Australian Workers Union, claimed £SOOO damages respectively from A. C. Willis M.L.C., George Smith, J. O’Reilly, J. Howie and Dan Rees, former members of the Australian Labour Party executive, alleging that defendants had, as executive, alleging that defendants had, as five officers, prepared and read a defamatory report before the A.L.P. conference in 1922, describing 1 Bailey as a political leper and impugning his conduct at an election of officers held about that time.
The jury to-day found in favour of ©alley and awarded damages as follow: Against Willis, £2750; against Howie, Smith and Rees £500; against O ’Reilly, £250.
