From Our Own Correspondent, School Committee Meeting.

The Committee of tho Foxton District High School held its monthly meeting on Monday night. Those present were Messrs J. K. Hornblow (chairman), M. E. Perreau, John Boss, G. F. Smith, H. Hutchins and B. Bangiheuea (secretary). Mr. F. A. Mason (headmaster) was also in attendance. It was reported by the headmaster that the infant mistress (Miss Mountfort) had been granted extended leave of absence on account of sickness. Two relieving teachers were at present attached to the staff and Mr. Bastion, who had been appointed assistant teacher in place of Mr. Chipper, was to take up his duties at the beginning of the year. The number of pupils on tho roll was as follows: —Primary, 417 (average attendance, 91 per cent); secondary, 37 (average attendance, 94 per cent); Beach school, 48 (average attendance, 94 per cent. Tho total number on the roll is 502.

The purchase of two typewriters and a duplicator for the use of pupils taking the commercial course, was recommended by the headmaster, who pointed out that these machines could also be used for supplying question and test papers to the pupils. Tho committee decided to utilise £ls from the concert funds for this purpose. The headmaster also reported that the Matriculation examination was to commence, the following day, Five three-year course students were to sit for this examination and seven, pupils were to sit in. the Public Service entrance examination. Fifty-two pupils were to have sat in tho proficiency examination, which is to commence to-day but of this number 21 had been exempted on his recommendation. Arrangements were in hand for the presentation of the annual concert by scholars, but owing to the lack of assistance this year, tho staff had-been greatly handicapped in the training of the children.—The report was adopted.

The committee authorised Mr. Hutchins to- furnish an estimate for the laying down of a basketball area. Tho question of increasing the tennis area

was discussed but it was decided to hold tho matter over until tho subsidy statement had been received from tho board. Accounts amounting to £42 5s 9d were passed for payment. The visitors appointed for tho month are Messrs G. F. Smith and H. Hutchins. Dorcas Society.

The Dorcas Society held its final meeting for this year, in All Saints' schoolroom on Monday afternoon. Thosa present were Bo\. W. H. Walton (chairman), Mcsdames W. H. Walton, F. Bobinson, M. E. Perreau, C. H. Symons, W. H. Nicholas, Moore and Bev, Edmond-* sou. Apologies for absence were re-* ccivcd from Mcsdames Edmondson, Christie and Bev. W. H. Nicholas. The headmaster of the District High School wrote expressing thanks and appreciation for tho work of the society in providing soup to approximately 70 pupils during tho winter months. The meeting expressed its thanks to ail those who had provided soup and the hope was voiced that there would be still more offering to help in thi., direction next winter. Thanks were accorded the following for donations of clothing which had been distributed during the winter: —Mcsdames W« H. Walton, F. Eobinson, W. H. Nicholas, F. S. Easton, A. Boss, B. Moore, S. J. Easton, W,"Warwick and Stone. Several parcels from anonymous donors had aiso been received. Following is a list of thoso who have supplied soup to. the school children:-*—Mesdames F. Smith, Nye, Miss Boss, Miss Speirs and Miss Mountfort. (The meeting resolved to forward to the Bev. F. McDonald a message of sympathy ia his sad bereavement.
