E. D. Andrews In South England Tennis

RECORD ENTRIES. According to the “Observer” (England), the South of England tennis championships, which were played at Devonshire Park, Eastbourne, have broken all previous records as far as entries were concerned. As the wind-ing-up grass court meeting of the summer, Eastbourne always gets a gigantic entry, but this year the programme contained nearly 1400 matches, which is an increase of 100 more than in any previous year. E. D. Andrews (New Zealand) showed his best form all through the week, and the stands were packed to their utmost capacity when tho New Zealander-met H. K. Lester, in the final. Andrews had beaten opponents of high standing in the tennis world with a minimum of difficulty, and the critics now declare that when the New Zealander is playing well there are few players better worth watching, for he has all the shots and a shrewd knowledge of tactics. Attack is his .watchword, and he carried it into practice against Lester with great success in the first set. Lester, although always quick off the mark, could not hold Andrews, who won the first set C—-4. Lester’s passing shots improved in the second set, and Andrews’ advances to the net were checked. The latter made a great effort to save the set, but Lester took it 6 —3. It now appeared all over, as Lester’s form still held, and he obtained a lead of 4—l in the final set. Andrews crowded on the pace, and amidst great excitement took five games in succes-sion-for set, match, and championship. Andrews went out the winner of a match quite 'worthy of the traditions of the Eastbourne finals. Andrews and N .Sharpe won the final of tho doubles, beating H. K. Lester and E. C. Peters, 3 —(5, 6 —2, 10—S. So far nothing definite has been received as to Andrews returning to New Zealand this year. Some time back lie informed the writer that he might be back in time for the New Zealand championships.
