Trustees Ask For Help In Providing Trophies

HERBSRT SMITH BEQUEST. An extraordinary problem confronts the trustees of the Herbert Smith Trust. They are required to spend £IO,OOO in purchasing athletic trophies for children, and although about a year ago has passed they have been able to spend only £7OO. Mr. Smith bequeathed £IO,OOO to be spent over a period of seven years for trophies for athletic competition among the children of New Zealand between the ages of nine and 15 years, his object being to help toward developing the youth of New Zealand into hardy and self-reliant men and women. The trustees, Messrs. C. B. Smith and R. English, of Hamilton, indicated the folowing as some of the competitions in respect of which applications arc considered:—Harriers, route marching, skipping, swimming, amateur athletics, primary and secondary school sports, sports in connection with the T oung Men’s Christian Association, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and similar institutions, hockey, tennis, basketball, football and cricket.

The secretary of the trust, Mr. English, stated that grants had been mado to schools and institutions from as far north at Kaikohe to as far south as the Bluff for athletic trophies. The trustees had purchased a large number of silver cups, valued at £5 ss. and £8 Ss. and minature cups valued at £2 2s. and £3 35., and these are distributed as the applications are approved. The trustees’ recent purchase include 200 miniature cups, one of which -will go with each challang6 cup awarded, the miniature cun to be the property of the successful child, and the challenge cup to be held by the school team, or institution.

The trustees seek the co-operation of all schools and institutions in helping them to spend the money in terms of the bequest. The whole of the principal has to be spent on trophies, the working expenses being met by the interest earned.'
