S.P.C.A. Activities

IN FEILDING- AND DISTRICT. LACK OF FUNDS. "The work of the society for this year has been hampered by lack of funds, ’’ states the annual report or the Fcilding branch of the S.P.C.A., presented to the annual meeting presided over by Mr. J. S. Tingey. The report went on to state that an application to the Macarthv Trust for a grant proved fruitless. The M. A. Buckley Trust yielded the society the sum of £2l odd. The inspector, Mr. Philip, had done much excellent work, particularly in regard to the bobby calf trade. Very few instances of cruelty had been reported. The balance sheet showed that subscriptions received for the year amounted to £ls 6s 6d. The expenditure for the year amounted to £34 18s, leaving a credit balance of £2B 4s. From this sum there had since been paid £lO inspector’s salary for the past quarter and £1 Is 6d to the Wanganui Society, leaving a credit balance of £l7 2s 6d for the coming year. The Inspector’s Report.

Mr. G. A. Philip reported: Now that 'the bobby calf trade has practically finished for the season it is satisfactory to the S.P.C.A. that, many reforms have been effected, not only in the feeding of calves blit the more effective transport to the various centres of slaughtering. The calves have, come forward in a better condition than last season. From 1927 to the present date the S.P.C.A. has done its utmost to see that stock were not kept an unreasonable time in the paddocks where there was an absence of water, especially the dry months. Much has been effected in this direction and one may say that the water supply in the stock paddocks around the town is satisfactory. On one of the outlying portions of the borough where the water supply was always inadequate for the wants of stock in dry season, water has been laid on and windmills overhauled for efficiency and usefulness. The trucking yard at the railway station has been considerably improved and a shed erected for the shelter of pigs. This is a decided improvement, for fat pigs were lying in the sun before trucking. I have regularly visited the auction mart and the saleyards, and although one or two instances have come before my notice and investigated no action has been needed. In a large stock centre like Feilding many instances of hardship to stock are bound to crop up, and are unavoidable in many cases. With the large entries at the- cattle fairs held of late the accommodation has been good and the dispatch excellent. I have taken the opportunity of informing owners of any sheep that have been, bitten by worrying dogs the best remedies- to apply so as to prevent cruelty if left unattended. The following is an abstract report as to eases dealt with to September 30, 2929; ■ Stock destroyed: 2 cows, 9 dogs, 3 cats, 2 sheep; total 16. Cautions given: Sheep, neglecting to provide food and water; overloading cattle trucks; overloading of calves; ingrowing, horn; dogs too long on chain; dogs neglected while diseased; overloading sheep trucks; as to fowls in bags; as to pigs in bag; ponies tied to fences during winter months; total 11. There were no prosecutions. The outgoing committee was Te-elect-ed and also the hon. secretary,. Mrs. McAlpine.
