SPORTING

Notes by “Avis.”

Nigktmnrcli has been rehandicapped 21fc. for the New Zealand Cup, making the weight 9.'0.

Leontes, a five-year-old gelding by Sea Prince, which made a world’s “two miles hurdle record at Mooneo Valley, covering tho distance in 3.364, contested 18 races last season and ran unplaced each time.

Kick Off is eleven years old and prior to his second in the Seafield Handicap and his win in the Higgio Handicap at Wanganui, the last time he got a prize was as a four-year-old, when he was third to King’s Trumpeter and Sunart in the J. D. Ormond Gold Cup at Hastings.

When Cashier led the field home in the Marangai Handicap last Thursday for Mr. T. A. Duncan to be credited with the thick end of the stake and in the next race Laughing Prince and Consent filled first and third places respectively for the same owner, it looked any odds on the Huntcrville sportsman topping the list of winning owners for the” Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting. Still, to make assurance doubly sure, Laughing Prince annexed the Eclipse Stakes on Saturday, and to wind up a bumper meeting for the owner of Otairi station Consent kept his head in front of Havering'in the concluding event. With tho help of these three representatives Mr. Tom Duncan was credited with stakes amounting to £1145 during tho meeting, this sum being more than a quartor of the £4225 offered in stakes by the Wanganui Club.

The South Canterbury threo-ycar-old Pink Coat struck himself recently and may be unable to fulfil his engagement in tho Great Northern Guineas, next month.

C. Davis has been engaged to ride Lady Limond in the New Zealand Cup. Davis, who has served his apprenticeship period, is now attached to G. Ncich’s stable at Clarcvillo, and rode Full Mark when he won both days at Marton. He is a capable light-weight and has made a good start for the season. \

Division in Maiden Plats at Avondale. As the number of acceptors in the Maiden Plate to be run at the Avondale meeting next Saturday exceeds the safety number, the event will be run in divisions. There are (states a Southern exchange) a large number of racegoers who are anxiously awaiting the reappearance o)i Mr. J. B. McKenzie's racing colt Llewellyn in a Tace. His connections claim that he is the best bred horse in New Zealand, and although other owners also claim that their horses have this honour, there are few who will disagree that a combination of Guy Axworthy and San Francisco bloods takes a lot of beating. Llewellyn has made a profound impression on the American trainer, B. B. Plaxico. who in a letter to the “American Horse Review" claims that the colt has done quarters in 31s. and a milo in 2.15. This is eye-opening information, so look out the first time he is taken to the races. It will be “some picnic.

After Biuthair's second in the Higgie Handicap -on Saturday, any doubts about the mare going to Avondale were set at rest and B. E. Hatch left last night with his charge for Auckland. None of the other horses of the ’stable made the trip. Piuthair, with 7.6, is handily placed in the Cup.
