DISASTROUS FIRE IN GRAIN STORE
STOCK WORTH £IO,OOO A TOTAL LOSS. Per Press Association. BLENHEIM, Last Night. A disastrous fire, involving a total loss of about £13,000, broke out at A. M. Corry and Co.'s store, Spring Creek, last night. Buildings and fittings are valued at £3OOO, but the stock contained in them was worth about £IO,OOO. No fire-fighting facilities were available and it was impossible to attempt salvage, as the heat was so great. At its height, the blaze presented an awe-inspiring spectacle. The building was leased by Corry and Co. from Robertson and Mills and was used principally as a grain store. It was insured for £IBOO and there is aIBO a policy of £2OO on the seed cleaning plant. The store contained 8000 sacks of chaff, 3500 to 4000 sacks of barley and about 1500 sacks of seed peas, as well as general merchandise. Tho insurances on these total £7500.
