MILLION DOLLAR CHEQUE DISCOVERED IN GUTTER
STARVING LAD’S LUCK,
A new York boy named Jimmy Duckett was down on his luck, down at heel, down-hearted, with the dejection that goes with an empty stomach after a “ down-and-outcr’s ” night of catnaps in doorways. In this sad state Jimmy slouched through the rich Jinancial district of the city one morning a few weeks ago, heedless of the chill April rain that dripped from his hat and of the bustling crowds about him. Next to something to cat, his most desperate need was “a job of work.” Jimmy had not the least notion of finding employment in Mall street, which was the most unlikely ot ail places. His feet kicked an envelope, which attracted his attention to it. Mechanically he. picked it up. Inside was a. slip of paper which revealed itself as a. cheque for one, million dollars. It was made payable by Pynchon and Company, stockbrokers, to the liunovei National Bank. Stunned, trembling, disbelieving, Jimmy took the, cheque to the bank, where it was soon learned the envelope l.ad been dropped by a messenger. A bank messenger was instructed to escort, Duckett with the cheque to Pvnehons. 'To-day Duckett is not hungry, nor wet, nor depressed, nor is lie looking lor a job
