Impetuous Earl’s Name Removed from Army List

HE “London Gazette” recently contained the following announcement: “Irish Guards: SecondLieut. The Earl of Aylesford is removed
in Kashmir. The result was that he was reported as having absented himself. “The whole thing is the result of an impulsive young man not having read the King’s Regulations properly,” the Hon. Charles D. FinchKnightly, the trustee of Lord Aylesford’s estate, told a representative of “The Daily Chronicle.” “The incident occurred some weeks ago, and i 3 well known to most of his friends.” Father Killed The earl entered Sandhurst in 192 G, thus adopting the career of his father, Lord Guernsey (then heir to the title). Lord Guernsey, who was a captain of the Irish Guards, was killed at the Battle of the Aisne in • September, 1914. The earl was gazetted secondlieutenant last August. - > He owns about 9,000 acres, and has four residences —Abbots Ripton Hall, Huntingdon, Packington and Diddington Halls, - Coventry, and the Priars, Aylesford. He Is a keen motorist. • Last August his licence was endrosed and he was fined for driving a car to the public danger.

It is stated that the announcement in the “London Gazette” was the result of a mistake made by Lord Aylesford in his reading of the King’s Regulations. ; Lord Aylesford, who is 20, had decided to refeign I from the Army and take up a civil career. Early in April he handed in his papers. Instead of waiting for them to pass through the normal channels and to receive his discharge he immediately absented himself from his unit.
