GEOPHYSICS

GERMANY LEADS THE WORLD

“There is nothing of any importance to be learnt in either America or England in regard to geophysics,” said Mr. Benjamin Dunstan, Queensland’s Chief Government Geologist, on his' return to Sydney by the Sierra recently. “But tliero is an amazing amount lo be learnt from the Continental nations, and the sooner Australians wake up tu the fact the better.” Without an up-to-date knowledge of geophysical methods, be said, the mineral wealth of a country might remain unexplored for an indefinite period. What amounted virtually to “X-ray-ing” the earth was the method nowbeing used with immense success in the countries he visited. On behalf of the Queensland government he had been investigating scientific methods of prospecting for minerals, paying particular attention to geophysical measurements. In the course of his investigations he had toured from end to end Rumania, Poland, Austria, and Germany, as well as England and America. In America he concentrated his attention upon the devices used for discovering oilfields “The information I have obtained

from the German scientists,” ho said, ‘‘indicates to me that we have d, tremendous lot lo learn from these people. English scientists, when I told them something of what I had learnt in Germany, were amazed.” Mr. Dunstan expressed himself as being very hopeful of applying tho information lie has gained to the practical exploitation of Queensland’s mineral wealth.
