OROUA RIVER

FLOOD WATERS SUBSIDE. , Yesterday morning, the flood walci in the Oroua had subsided to a great cytent although the liver is still wiuw swollen as a result of the heavy rains in the back country. A visit was paid to Thompson's property, where the river is eating into the high bank which forms the boundary of the farm. Floods have caused considerable erosion at this point and many acres of land have been washed away

through the river changing its course and being permitted t-o have tree plav. This bank keeps the river away from the low-lviug ground (tiio original river bed)'at the foot of Simon street, but so much of this natural barrier has gone that it would appear only a matter of time before flood waters will cover the land from Simon street to Campbell street. It does not look as though the river is likely to change its course, unless extensive protective v/orks arc put in hand and action ol this nature will sooner or later be forced on the settlers if much valuable properly is to bo protected.. Unless soniotbiiig is done, the prospects are not, too blight fur property owners in Campbell street ami others close by.
