I~ ' Mr. J. Murray, rector of tho Palmerston North Boys' High School, is confined to his bed-with influenza. A Sydney cable reports tho death of Captain J. E. Morris, State superintendent of navigation at Sydney, aged 61 years. The retirement will take place at the end of this month of Mr. G. C. Fachc, Commissioner of Pensions, after forty years in tho Public Service.
Mr. T. R. Hodder and Mrs. J. Aitchison will represent tho Palmerston North Technical committee at the Technical Education conference in Wellington in September. Mr. J. P. Thorpe, who is well known in racing circles as the owner of -the famous horses Acre and Gasoag, leaves this week for Hamilton, where he intends starting a stud farm. Mr A. H. Talbot, organising manager for tike William Hough an World Tours, Is at present in Palmerston North, arranging for the visit of that talented singer and liis conccaT party on July 20 and 22.
A cable message from London announces the death of Sir Mortimer Singer, K.8.E., aged GG. Born in Yonkers, United States, Sir Mortimer was educated at Cambridge. Ho was a pioneer in cycling, motoring and flying and since ISBI had been a breeder apd racer of thoroughbred h-orses. The Board of Directors of the Christchurch Pres 3 company yesterday appointed Mr Oliver Duff as editor in succession to the late Mr T. C. Keane. Mr Duff has been a member of the Press editorial staff since the beginning of 1923 and w r as formerly editor of the Timaru Herald. Before his appointment to tho Herald, he was assistant to tho editor of tho Christchurch Sun.
