ITALY’S NEW RAILWAY TUNNEL

It is 15 years now since a new railway was begun in Italy which will shorten the journey between Bologna and Florence by 20 miles and halve the time. For the last six years 7000 men have been employed on the railway and it is expected to be opened in two years, completing a direct and rapid train service through Central Italy. The line is carried through 00 tunnels and over 41 bridges and viaducts. The main tunnel, piercing the central ridge of the Appcnine, is 11 miles long. Though it is not so long as the .Simplon tunnel it has been more difficult to make owing to the presence of water and gas.
