Messrs. H. G. Bagnall and L. M. Abraham have gone to Taupo for a week’s fishing prior to the season closing. A Press Association telegram announces the death at the age of 67 years of Air Michael Hawkins, a former Controller-General of Prisons. The term of office of the Tasmanian Govonor, Sir Jas. O’Grady has been extended a year, as from December 23, 1929.

Constable B. Gillard, stations! in Palmerston North, received notification yesterday of his transfer to Icilding. He will be replaced by Constable J. J. Culloty, at present stationed ill Invercargill. The many friends of Air. Douglas Brophy will regret fo learn that ho is at present in a private hospital where he has undergone an operation for appendicitis. He is reported to be making satisfactory progress towards convalescence.

The death occurred at Christcnurcu last evening of Air. F. N. Adams, founder of the firm of Adams, Ltd. and one of the pioneers of the motor industry in New Zealand, at the ago of Go years. The deceased, who was a single man, had been in failing health for the past 12 months and gradually sank. Associated with Air. Adams were several brothers who have also been closely identified with the linn. They are Messrs Charles, of Palmerston North, Daly, of Wanganui and R. M. and H. C. Adams of Christchurch, where two sisters also reside. The funeral will take place at Christchurch on Alonday morning and the Palmerston North branch will be closed to-day.

A well known and respected resident of Levin died unexpeetedy on Thursday evening, in the perfon of Mrs Theresa Shanks, wife of Mr. Hugh Shanks. Tho deceased, wlio-was born in Berlin in IS7O, came to Now Zealand with her parents 54 years ago, and after living for 35 years in the Pahiatua district retired to levin with her husband about eight years ago. Her father, who died at Palmerston North, was a veteran of the Franco-Prussian war. Airs Shanks leaves no family, but is survived by her only sister, Mrs Buckley, of Pahiatua, and her husband, for both of whom much sympathy will be felt. Farmers practically all their lives, Air and Airs Shanks were a devoted couple, and their regular presence in town on market days rendered them familiar figures among the settlers.
