PLAGUE IN JAPAN
WAR AGAINST FLEAS MARMOTS IN GREAT DEMAND KOBE, May 16. The discovery of a case of plague in Osaka, following a similar discovery in Kobe, is causing grave concern. Marmots arc being used to catch fleas on board jliip, and their market prico is reported to have risen threefold. Every illness reported in the district and on board ship arouses fresh anxiety. The plague occurred on a cotton ship which arrived from Bombay. The official theory of the manner of infection is that all tho crew went ashore except the victim, on whom the fleas concentrated their attack.
A vigorous campaign of disinfection has been carried out, followed by flencatching operations. Marmots are let loose on the ships, recaught and examined for fleas, and the fleas arc examined for plague.
