“ALL CRIMINALS ARE FOOLS”

TWELVE MONTHS’ HARD LABOUR FOR MEAN THEFT. Per Press Association. AUCLAND, Last Night. “Your counsel has described you as more of a fool than a knave. All criminals are fools,” Mr. Justice Herdman told Ronald Alfred Monten when sentencing him for theft in the Supreme Court this morning. His Honour said the theft was a particularly mean one and almost amounted to robbing a drunken man. The facts were that a country shepherd came to the city and yi a moment of foolishness put money in Monten's charge. Tho latter abused that trust and almost succeeded in absconding from New Zealand. In addition to that the prisoner took his stand in tho witness box and perjured himself in an impudent fashion. Monten would be sentenced to twelvo months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
