It is expected that in only eight of the 615 constituencies will there be no contest when tho general election takes place at the end of tho month. Already 1655 candidates are in tho field, which constitutes a record for Parliamentary elections in {his country. Wireless broadcasting is playing, ana will continue to play, an important part in the contest. Conservative, Labour and Liberal spokesmen have in turn used the microphone during the last few weeks and arrangements have been made for women representatives of each of the three parties to broadcast special addresses to women.

Mr. Lloyd George, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald and Mr. Baldwin, tho three party leaders, will speals on May 27, 28 and 29 respectively, delivering their final messages to tho voters prior to the polling on May 30. One in every three houses in the country has the wireless and the estimated listeners number 20,000,000. The Prime Minister this week-end issued a manifesto, in which he urged the voters to regard the Government’s fulfilment of its pledges in the past four years as a guarantee that it returned to power it would again keep faith. In reviewing tho work of his administration, the Primo Minister stated that, despite the industrial troubles of 1926, which cost the taxpayers £80,000,000 and tho trade of the country £400,000,00, trade was now moro prosperous than at any time since the war. As indications of tho improvement he stated 78 coal mines reopened this year. Mr. Baldwin pointed to tho revival in shipbuilding, to an increase in tho national trading profit from £86,000,000to £149,000,000 during tho past four years, and to the fact that 600,000 more people were working than in 1924. Hindi that date 800,000 houses had been erected, the cost of living had been reduced and much social legislation passed, including the extension of the old-age pensions to insured workers at 65 instead of 70, and tho largo scheme of rating and local government reform which had been introduced, and which would bo of vast benefit to agriculture and industry.
